Team DBAH: The Pull List #49 For March 30 2016

A weekly column in which Jake gives short blurbs about the comics he’s picked up that week. Reviewed in the order read, which varies but generally by increasing anticipation. Disclaimer: he knows very little about art, at least not enough to considerably honor such tremendous undertakings, so…yeh, there’s that.

Drax vs. Fin Fang Foom. For the kids. Literally. It’s the fight we’ve been waiting for and…it’s a bit dissatisfying. Punk’n’Bunn never quite pull the trigger on the promised slugfest, instead opting for a more emotional/drama-filled finished that seems somewhat out of step with the series’s tone. Hepburn and Milla do their best to keep the art interesting, but admittedly there seems to be a bit of a miscue somewhere along the way as the action scenes we do get lack the wonder and glory one would expect. In its fifth issue, Drax closes out its first arc on a bit of a sour note. We’ll have to see if it can bounce back.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #6 BOOK OF THE WEEK

A light end to a light week, USG 6 kicks off the two-issue crossover with Howard the Duck and, from all indications, it looks to be the start of something amazing. Howard is the perfect straight man to Team Squirrel Girl’s shenanigans and his sour yet hilarious character meshes nicely with Doreen’s upbeat and hilarious attitude. North and Zdarsky also mesh well, with both authors included in the series’s hallmark bottom-of-the-page texts, making for one of the funnier entries of that segment. Henderson, per usual, nails every beat the script asks of her with aplomb and even pulls off a rather tricky paneling trick halfway through. Renzi keeps the book lively and vibrant, even in the night scenes. Watch out Secret Wars, the next best Marvel crossover has arrived.
